So long as you keep moving, and don't get lanced yourself, your speed and range should keep you safe and in control of most fights. The heavy lance (with a fast horse) can easily dismount loads of enemy horsemen by killing their horses. I mostly use the dense formation tactic along with a heavy lance. Light troops with hand axes won't do anything against armoured enemy or horses, and spearmen won't do much if the enemy horsemen can get in close before the spears are effective. The key to any anti-horse tactic is making sure you've decent weapons.
Any cavalry charging in to assist will also get halted by the density of your ranks and attacked from all sides.Īnother good tactic is to draw the enemy off by yourself and let your army engage just a few horsemen at a time. Any cavalry charging into your men will slow down (because of the terrain) and get stopped+swamped by the bulk of your men.
If you're correct, the character will enter the couching animation.
If you've infantry then I suggest bunching them up as tight as you can on as steep a slope as you can. (Keep running with your horse and suddenly you will see the lance level horizontally.) If you're hardcore, you can switch the lance control to 'manual' in the options menu and then you have to hit the X key to couch it when you 'feel' you're at the right speed. There are a few good counters to cavalry but they often depend upon terrain and the type of cavalry.
